AI Growth Creates Energy Demands and Safety Worries

Artificial intelligence (AI) is growing very fast. This brings new ideas. But it also creates problems for energy markets. It also makes people ask questions about safety. Big AI companies are hiring people who know about dangerous materials. The big energy needs of AI are helping the fossil fuel industry. This is especially true for natural gas. This situation shows a difficult choice. It is between new technology and old environmental problems.

Some US AI companies are looking for experts. These experts know about chemical weapons and diseases. Companies want to stop their AI from being used badly. OpenAI, which made ChatGPT, is also hiring people. They are looking for researchers who understand biological and chemical dangers. A researcher named Dr. Stephanie Hare is worried. She thinks AI might process information about dangerous chemicals.

However, this focus on safety is happening at the same time as energy use is rising. AI models need a lot of computer power. This requires very large data centres. These centres use a lot of electricity. Because of this, the natural gas business is growing again. Big energy companies are making and selling more natural gas. Shell thinks people will need natural gas until the 2040s.

The world's politics are changing because of energy. The European Union wants less energy from Russia. So, it is buying more energy from the United States. US natural gas is now more important for the EU. More natural gas will be sent around the world by 2026. Also, gas from Israel will go to Egypt by 2028. This will change energy supplies in that area.

AI development is connected to energy plans. Power grid limits and the energy needed for data centres are important. These factors are shaping how countries and companies plan for technology and energy security. AI faces misuse risks. But its energy needs help fossil fuels. This creates a confusing situation. We must ask if we can use AI's benefits without harming the environment.
