Foot-and-Mouth Disease Emergency in Cyprus

Cyprus is facing a serious problem with Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). This disease has spread quickly. Many farm animals must be killed. Strict rules now limit animal movement on the island. The problem started in Larnaca. It has now reached the Nicosia area. The European Union has started special rules. Some areas are now in a state of emergency. This is very important for Cyprus's farms.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Veterinary Services are working together. They are trying to stop the disease. They are killing infected animals quickly. This stops the virus from spreading more. About 15,000 animals have been killed. Another 15,000 animals are waiting to be killed. New zones have been created. These zones help to isolate the disease. Checkpoints and cleaning stations are everywhere. They remind us of the fight against FMD.

The disease spread very fast. This has been difficult for the authorities. The Nicosia area became infected recently. This happened after a visit from an EU official. Special zones were set up quickly. These zones include many farms. Many cattle, sheep, and goats live there. The EU official said it is important to follow the rules. This will help prevent many animal deaths. It will also avoid big money problems.

This outbreak has big effects. The dairy industry is very important for Cyprus. It is a main part of the economy. It also helps with exports. The supply of milk is now a problem. Sheep and goat milk are needed for halloumi cheese. The cheese is still safe to eat and sell. This is because it is cooked with heat. However, the ingredients for halloumi are in trouble. The milk supply is a critical issue.

Vaccination is important for fighting FMD. However, not enough sheep and goats are vaccinated. Only about 41% are vaccinated. This is much lower than for cattle. This low rate makes it harder to stop the virus. The Ministry of Agriculture will announce more plans. Farmers are worried about their future. They are also worried about Cyprus's good name. Cyprus is known for good dairy products. Halloumi is still being exported. However, the problem with milk supply must be solved.
