Cyprus Websites Face Temporary Disruptions

Websites in Cyprus have recently experienced cyber attacks. These are mostly Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. George Michaelides, the Communications Commissioner, said these attacks happen often. He also said they are not a big danger.

The Digital Security Authority (DSA) is watching these events closely. Many websites, not just government ones, have been unavailable for a short time. DDoS attacks send too much fake traffic to websites. This makes them stop working for real users. Michaelides explained these attacks are simple to do. They do not need special skills. Therefore, they happen a lot.

We do not know why these attacks are happening. Michaelides thinks they might be linked to world events. Cyprus also currently leads the European Union. However, he said we cannot be sure. Many different websites were affected. So, it is hard to say the government was the main target. The disruptions have not lasted long each day.

The DSA is staying alert. They are watching the internet closely. They also give advice to important services. Website owners can get help from special companies. These companies can redirect traffic away from busy servers. Michaelides said this works well if owners pay for the service. It helps protect against future problems.

DDoS attacks only stop websites for a short time. They do not harm the main computer systems. Michaelides called them "the least dangerous type" of cyber threat. The DSA and protection services are working hard. This shows that cyber threats are always there. However, they can be managed. Michaelides wants to reassure people and businesses.
