Cyprus Sees Better Trade Balance

Cyprus has made its trade balance much better. This is good news for the country's economy. Official numbers show the trade gap was much smaller in January 2026. This happened because Cyprus worked to increase exports and decrease imports. This trend started at the end of 2025. It shows Cyprus is becoming more independent economically.

The trade deficit in January 2026 was €476.6 million. Last year, in the same month, it was €707.5 million. This is a big change, over €230 million less. It means Cyprus is selling more goods and services abroad. It is also buying less from other countries. This helps make the economy stronger.

This good result also comes from changes in late 2025. In December, imports went down by about 10%. Businesses and people bought less from other countries. At the same time, exports grew by about 10%. This is important because it helps close the trade gap.

Some parts of the economy helped exports grow. Industrial products sold well. This means manufacturing is strong or more competitive. Farm products also sold better. Supplies for ships and planes in Cyprus also increased. These different areas show Cyprus is selling more things internationally.

A better trade balance has many benefits. It can make people trust the Cypriot currency more. This can make it worth more. Then, imported things become cheaper. Cypriot exports also become cheaper for other countries. This can help businesses invest more. It can also create more jobs. Products like halloumi cheese and medicines can sell even better. This makes the economy stronger for the future.
