Cyprus is discussing a big change for its electricity. Some people want to go back to a single buyer for all electricity. This could change how the island gets its power. This discussion happens as a major step is finished for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI). This project will connect Cyprus to Greece by an underwater cable. It will help make energy safer.
The idea for a single buyer comes from worries about the current market. This market started in October 2025. Some believe it has not made electricity cheaper for people. Supporters say the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (AHK) should buy all power again. This is different from the current market. Now, many companies sell electricity to the main grid. Some think generation costs are low. However, electricity is bought for much more money. This makes people question if the market is working well.
There are also claims that some renewable energy companies are making too much profit. Because of this, a special tax on renewable energy might be considered. However, information from the Cyprus Transmission System Operator shows a different picture. It says renewable energy costs have been around eleven to twelve cents per kilowatt-hour. This is especially true when there is a lot of sun. This is lower than some other costs mentioned.
At the same time, the GSI project is moving forward. A very important test for the underwater cables was finished. This test happened near Sicily, Italy. The cables were tested deep in the sea. They were tested at high voltage, even more than usual. They were also checked carefully to make sure they are ready.
This successful test is a key part of the GSI. It will be one of the longest and deepest underwater power cables in the world. It shows that it is possible to build and use this technology at great depths. While the GSI project continues, Cyprus is also thinking about its electricity market. The decision about the market could greatly change how electricity is made and sold to homes and businesses.
