Cyprus: Good Healthcare, Bad Buses

Cyprus is a country with two different stories. On one hand, the country is improving its hospitals. On the other hand, public buses have big problems. Cyprus is building new medical places. However, the bus system is having many difficulties.

A good bus service in the capital, Nicosia, stopped working recently. This was the Pame Express service. It helped people avoid traffic. It took people from a big stadium to the city center. The service stopped on March 23rd.

The reason for stopping was a lack of bus drivers. Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) manages buses in Nicosia and Larnaca. CPT only had seven drivers for this special service. They drove about 80 routes each day. This was not enough. The company said there are not enough drivers in the whole country. This problem affects all bus companies.

This stop means fewer bus choices for people in Nicosia. It could make people use public transport even less. Many European countries have better public transport use.

In contrast, Cyprus is doing well with healthcare. A new hospital will be built in Polis Chrysochous. This area needs better medical services. The hospital should be finished by the end of 2028. This will help about 20,000 people.

Also, a National Cancer Institute is being planned. It will help coordinate cancer treatments. It will also share important medical advice. It will start at the Ministry of Health. Later, a new building will be made for it.

There are also talks about university clinics joining the health system. Doctors and government people are discussing this. They want to improve medical teaching and patient care. More meetings will happen before the next elections.

Cyprus is investing in healthcare. However, the bus system needs more attention. The country needs to fix its transport problems. This will create a better system for everyone.
