School Visit Shows Big Changes in Student Numbers

A group of politicians visited schools in Nicosia. They were worried about changes in the number of students. Many students are now from different countries. This happened on Friday. The politicians looked at two schools. These were the third primary and third nursery schools.

Parents asked the politicians to visit. They were unhappy about the changing student population. The politicians saw "serious problems." At one nursery school, only six children were Greek Cypriot. There were 170 students from other countries. More than half of the primary school students are now from immigrant families. This has caused worry about the schools. It also raises questions about teaching methods.

The politicians talked to teachers and parents. Teachers are working hard to help students learn Greek. They want a peaceful learning place. However, it is difficult. Parents from immigrant families often cannot come to school. They may be working. Some mothers cannot visit because of their culture.

Many children who speak Arabic go to the Kaimakli school. This is because there are already many Arabic-speaking children there. One politician, Pavlos Mylonas, said this. He explained that parents move their children to this school. They do this because it has the most Arabic-speaking children. This is a main reason for the changes.

These changes are important. The education committee knows it is complicated. They need better ways to communicate. Therefore, they have asked for an interpreter. This person will help teachers and parents understand each other. The committee's report will help decide future plans. They want to solve the problems in Kaimakli's schools.
