Court Case Over National Guardsman's Death Continues

A court in Limassol is hearing a difficult case. It is about the death of Thanasis Nicolaou in 2005. Thanasis was a 26-year-old Australian-Cypriot soldier. Investigations first said he died by suicide. Now, his family has started a private criminal case.

The case has faced problems. The prosecutor suddenly stopped his work. He said he got a death threat. However, the defence team does not agree with this. They think the threat is not real.

The defence team has made objections. They want the case to stop. They say important witness papers were late. The court set a deadline of March 9th. The defence believes this is unfair. It could affect the trial.

The prosecutor was important in bringing this case. The state legal service did not want to prosecute. Now, the prosecutor wants to be a witness himself. This is unusual for the case.

The prosecutor said he received a notice. He believes it is a death threat. However, the defence has a different story. They say he went to the police himself. They think he made up the threat. The defence also says he is trying to help his own case.

The family is trying to get justice. They have brought 39 charges. These include hiding the truth and lying in court. The state legal service did not want to prosecute before. A ruling later said he was murdered. The current problems with the prosecutor raise questions. If the defence objections are successful, the case might end. This would be very sad for the family. The court will meet again on March 19th.
