Cyprus will have very different weather soon. The calm and warm start to December is finishing. Forecasters say stormy weather is coming. It could even bring snow to the highest mountains.
The weather service says a strong low-pressure system, named Byron, is coming. It will replace the current calm, high-pressure weather. This change will bring several days of unstable weather. There will be thunderstorms, strong winds, and much cooler temperatures.
This means the recent mild weather is over. The weather will become normal for this time of year. The change will start slowly on Thursday. The sky will get cloudier and there might be some light rain. Dust in the air will also make it hazy. The weather will get much worse from Friday evening.
The most unstable weather will be during the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be very cloudy with local showers and thunderstorms. These will happen more in the afternoons and evenings. Importantly, it could get cold enough for snow or sleet on the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains. This will attract visitors, but people must be careful travelling in the mountains.
Temperatures will drop a lot. On Thursday, it could be 24°C inland. By Sunday, the maximum will only be 17-20°C. The wind will also become much stronger from Friday. It could be near gale force, especially on the north, east, and south coasts. This will make the sea very rough and dangerous for boats.
This unstable weather will continue into next week. People should check official weather updates, especially if they have outdoor plans. This storm is a good reminder that Mediterranean weather can change from calm to stormy very quickly.
