Japan to Deploy New Missiles Near Taiwan

Japan plans to put new, advanced missile systems on Yonaguni island. This island is very close to Taiwan. The new medium-range missiles will be ready by March 2031. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced the plans. These steps show Japan's worry about security. They also show Japan wants a stronger defence. The missiles will help protect against air attacks. This is a way to stop potential problems.

Tensions are high between China and Japan. China sees Taiwan as its own land. China is suspicious of Japan's defence plans. Because of this, China put restrictions on some Japanese companies. Many people think this was China's answer to Japan working more closely with Taiwan.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan would defend Taiwan if it was attacked. Beijing did not like this statement. Chinese media reported drones flying near Yonaguni island after this. Japan sent fighter jets in response. This shows the careful situation in the East China Sea. A fight over Taiwan could bring in big countries like the United States.

Yonaguni island is only 110 kilometres from Taiwan. The new missiles there are a big defence improvement. Japan is looking at its defence plans. It wants to protect itself and help keep the region stable. However, China thinks Japan is trying to change the power balance.

These events are important for the region. More military activity could increase distrust between Japan and China. This could make talking between them harder. Japan is improving its defence and working with friends. The situation in East Asia will likely stay uncertain. It is important to talk carefully to avoid bigger problems.
