Scam Farms Trap People in Asia

A big problem is happening in Southeast Asia. People who escape from scam farms are left with nothing. They were tricked with fake job offers for good pay. Then, they were taken to secret places. There, they were forced to do online scams. If they refused, they were threatened with violence or death. Help groups and governments find it hard to manage this growing problem. Many people are left alone and need help.

These scam groups work in the same way. People from over 50 countries are lied to. They are sent to places like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand. In these places, they are forced to do scams online all day. Montse Ferrer from Amnesty International said, "The government in Cambodia does not help these people." This lack of help makes things worse for those who escape.

Many people have been rescued. Last year, over 7,000 people were saved in Myanmar. Later, another 2,000 were freed. These rescues happen often, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic helped these criminal groups grow. Rescued people often have no money or ID. They are left homeless and struggle to start their lives again.

Help groups have limited resources. They have less money because of recent cuts to aid programs. Ferrer also said, "NGO support is not enough, especially after aid cuts." This means survivors' needs are not fully met. Hundreds of thousands of people are trapped in these places. Many survivors need urgent help from governments. Countries like Thailand and Cambodia are trying to stop these groups. However, helping the freed people is still a big challenge.
