Law enforcement officers shot and killed a man early Sunday. He was trying to enter President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The man was identified as Austin T. Martin from North Carolina. He was reportedly trying to get into the property without permission.
Secret Service agents and a sheriff's deputy met the man. This happened around 1:30 a.m. The FBI is now investigating the event.
Officials said Martin was seen going to the resort's north gate. He had what looked like a shotgun and fuel. Secret Service officers and a deputy told him to drop the items. Martin put down the fuel can. However, he then raised the shotgun.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the man's action left officers with no choice. They had to fire their weapons. Martin was hurt and later died. No officers were injured. President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time. He was in Washington D.C.
Investigators are looking into why Martin was there. His family had reported him missing. They are checking if the shotgun was bought on his trip. The FBI is leading the investigation. They will look at what happened and Martin's background.
This incident shows the difficulties in protecting important places. The FBI hopes to find out more about the man's reasons.
