Authorities in Cyprus are working quickly to stop a disease called Foot-and-Mouth Disease. The disease was found in the Larnaca area. Many farms with animals are now closed. Affected animals are being killed.
Veterinary experts are trying to stop the virus from spreading. They think the disease might have come from animal food brought into the country illegally.
The news was confirmed yesterday. Lab tests showed the virus is present. The disease might have been in the animals for two weeks. It started in sheep and goat farms. Later, it was found on a cattle farm.
A special zone is now around the affected farms. Police are stopping animals and products from moving. Trucks are being cleaned.
The Agriculture Minister is in charge of the response. She said the situation is serious but under control. They are using special plans to stop the spread. More vets are helping with tests.
Farmers are worried about their animals. About 300 cattle will be killed. They will be buried or burned. Farmers will get money for their losses. The farms will be closed for 21 days.
