Former Football Boss Faces Court

George Koumas, the former president of the Cyprus Football Association, will go to court. He faces many criminal charges. These charges include conflicts of interest and money laundering. Investigators believe Koumas used his important job for personal money. He did this through his own businesses.

The indictment has 25 charges. Most charges are about conflicts of interest. This happened because Koumas was a senior CFA official and a shareholder. He was also part of television companies. These companies supplied services to sports broadcasters. Cyta and Go PLC were some of these companies. The contracts were from 2014 to 2025. The charges focus on activities after 2017. Conflicts of interest were illegal in sports then.

Investigators found evidence. Koumas allegedly made deals. His companies got contracts from organizations he negotiated with. This allowed him to make a lot of money. It also hurt fair competition. The money laundering charges are about €6.5 million. Investigators say Koumas and his companies earned this money. They earned it through these bad deals.

This court case will be important. It will look at how football is managed in Cyprus. Four companies linked to Koumas in other countries are not charged. This might be because of laws. The laws are not clear for international companies.

Other people in sports administration are also involved. Four other people, including Anthoulis Mylonas, have already been to court. They are accused of not helping investigators. This happened in 2023. They could go to jail or pay a fine.

Koumas will appear in court on February 26, 2026. This will start a long legal battle. 33 witnesses are expected to give evidence. The result of this case will affect sports in Cyprus. It might lead to changes in anti-corruption laws.
