Long and important talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and top U.S. officials have finished. They did not find a way to stop the war in Ukraine. The meeting in Moscow went on for many hours, but the positions of the two countries are still very far apart.
The U.S. team talked with Putin and his adviser for about five hours. They discussed an American plan for peace. This plan was changed after Ukraine and European countries said the first ideas were too good for Russia.
After the meeting, a Russian adviser said they did not make real progress. "Compromises have not yet been found. There is still a lot of work to be done," he said. He explained that some parts of the American plan might be possible to discuss, but Russia cannot accept other parts. He did not give details.
A big problem is eastern Ukraine. The U.S. plan must satisfy Ukraine, which wants all its land back, and Russia, which controls some areas. Before the talks, Putin said ideas from Ukraine and Europe were not acceptable. He also warned European nations.
Russia called the talks "constructive" and mentioned future economic work. However, there is no plan for a ceasefire or for more serious negotiations. This means the war, now over three years old, will likely continue. Russia also said a meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump is not being planned now.
Without an agreement, the fighting continues. This high-level meeting could not solve the big problems about land and security. Diplomats will now have to keep working very hard, but the situation remains difficult and uncertain.
