Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus

A serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is causing worry in Cyprus. This is a very contagious viral illness. Authorities must now kill many farm animals. This is to stop the disease from spreading more. The Veterinary Services are working hard with the Ministry of Agriculture. They are trying to control the sickness. The problem is mainly in the Oroklini area.

Tests showed the virus is present. The disease was likely growing for two weeks. Oroklini is the main area affected. The sickness has now spread to Livadia. A large cattle farm in Livadia is a main source. About 260 cows there will be killed. Another farm with 300 animals nearby will also be culled.

Authorities have created a special zone. This zone is three kilometres around the farm in Livadia. It includes twenty-three animal farms. A larger ten-kilometre zone is also in place. Moving animals and animal products is not allowed. Police have set up many checkpoints. Vehicles leaving these areas are cleaned.

The reason for the outbreak is being investigated. Some think it came from illegal animal feed. Poor hygiene at some farms may also be a cause. Many investigations are happening now.

The Minister of Agriculture said the situation is under control. She also said the disease is not a danger to people. People can safely eat Cypriot meat and dairy. However, farmers will lose money. They expect compensation in one to two months.

More veterinary staff are helping in Larnaca. Some staff cannot take holidays. The European Commission has been informed. The affected farms will be watched for twenty-one days. This is if no new cases appear.
