UN Mission Finds Strong Evidence of Genocide in El Fasher

A United Nations investigation has found strong signs of genocide. This happened after the city of El Fasher was captured. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group took control. The mission's report was released this week. It shows an organized effort by the RSF and its allies. This campaign reportedly targeted the Zaghawa and Fur ethnic groups. The goal was to destroy them.

The mission's chair, Mohamed Chande Othman, spoke about the findings. He said the large scale and planning were clear. Senior RSF leaders supported the actions. Therefore, the crimes were not accidental. This shows planned violence. It has happened during an 18-month occupation. The UK, Canada, and the EU have condemned these events. They called them potential war crimes.

These serious accusations come amid more violence. Drone strikes in Kordofan have hurt civilians. At least fifteen children died in one strike. It hit a camp for displaced people. Another attack hit a market. It reportedly killed twenty-eight people. The RSF is linked to the market attack. However, the army is accused of the strike in Kordofan.

The civil war started in April 2023. It began after a fight for power. The RSF came from Janjaweed militias. They were known for violence in Darfur years ago. This history makes the UN findings about targeting groups very serious. The war has worsened a bad humanitarian crisis. There are reports of severe hunger. The RSF may get support from the UAE. However, the UAE denies this. This violence is a big problem for the region.
