Supreme Court Limits President's Tariff Power

The U.S. Supreme Court has made an important decision. It has stopped former President Donald Trump from using tariffs too much. These tariffs were put in place using a law called IEEPA. The court said the president's administration used too much power. This is a big problem for Mr. Trump's trade plans. The court believes the president acted like Congress.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the main opinion. He said the president needs Congress's permission. This is for big economic decisions. The court used a rule called the "major questions" doctrine. This rule means Congress must agree clearly. This helps keep power separate. Businesses and twelve states had complained. They said the president's actions were too much.

Mr. Trump often used tariffs when he was president. He used them for trade and foreign policy. The administration said the IEEPA law allowed this. This law was for emergencies. However, the court decided the tariffs were too broad. The court's 6-3 vote agreed with a lower court. This shows the courts check the president's power.

This decision creates some economic questions. Businesses and states might get money back. This could be billions of dollars. It also affects how presidents can use tariffs in the future. Mr. Trump has already announced new tariffs. He wants to find other ways to use them. He also criticized the court. This shows disagreements about power and trade.
