Cypriot towns are making new rules for Easter bonfires. This is because of growing safety problems and bad behaviour. A big meeting happened on February 19, 2026. Officials from different groups were there. They talked about how to make the bonfires safer.
These groups included town representatives, police, and firefighters. They are worried about the "lambradjies" custom. Andreas Vyras, a leader, said the tradition is being spoiled. He mentioned "bad behaviour" that does not fit their values. Some people are causing damage and not respecting order. This is happening especially in areas where people live.
The goal is to stop dangerous events. They also want the custom to be celebrated properly. Authorities are concerned about young people using dangerous things. Sadly, there have been accidents before. A young boy named Daniel Christian Fratilescu died during bonfire preparations. This shows why new safety rules are needed. A criminologist, Eleni Demetriou, said it is now a matter of public safety.
A plan is being made to solve these problems. The police will start planning early for Holy Week. They will work with towns and the fire service. A follow-up meeting is planned in one month. They will check the plan and make it better. The aim is to keep the bonfire tradition safe. Towns are asked to help the police with stricter controls. This will protect people and property.
