UN Report Says El-Fasher Attacks May Be Genocide

A United Nations report says that terrible acts happened during the recent attack on El-Fasher. This city is important in Sudan's Darfur region. The report, released this week, suggests these acts are genocide. It implicates the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their helpers. They seem to want to destroy the Zaghawa and Fur ethnic groups.

Investigators found three main reasons for their conclusion. These include killing members of an ethnic group. They also noted severe harm to bodies and minds. Finally, they saw planned living conditions meant to destroy these communities. This comes after many international complaints about war crimes in Sudan. The war started in April 2023 between the army and the RSF. It has now spread across the country.

The RSF blocked El-Fasher for 18 months. They did not allow any aid to reach the city. This caused many people to starve. Then, there were mass killings, rape, and torture. Mona Rishmawi, a UN expert, said the evidence is clear. The RSF intended to destroy the Zaghawa and Fur people. This is a sign of genocide.

The mission's leader, Mohamed Chande Othman, said the RSF planned these attacks. The scale and coordination show this. Senior RSF leaders supported the operation. The UN team interviewed many people. They also looked at videos and satellite images. This report is the closest the UN has come to calling actions genocide in Darfur. It reminds people of past terrible events in the region.

The UN report has important effects. The United Kingdom will share it with the UN Security Council. Many want international criminal investigations. This is to hold those responsible accountable. Meanwhile, the war continues to harm civilians. Recent drone strikes in another region caused many deaths. The world is also asked to stop sending weapons to Sudan.
