Prosecutor Becomes Witness in Long-Running Case

A prosecutor named Savvas Matsas has left his job in the Thanasis Nicolaou case. He will now be a witness. This happened on Thursday. The court has postponed the trial again. This case is about the death of a soldier in 2005. There are many claims of a cover-up.

Matsas decided to change roles. This may be because another investigator, Antonis Alexopoulos, did not want to testify. Alexopoulos is hoping for a new job in the courts. This job would stop him from giving evidence. Matsas also has another reason he has not shared. Before this, Matsas was removed from his investigator job. This was because he told the media about the case.

Now, a law firm will lead the prosecution. Christos Clerides’s firm will do this. Alexandros Clerides will represent them. The court agreed to the delay. This was needed for the change. The defence did not agree. However, the judge said no more delays will be allowed. All evidence must be given to the defence by March 9. The next court meeting is on March 13.

The case has many charges against five former officials. These include a pathologist and police chiefs. They are accused of helping to hide information after Nicolaou died. Matsas’s testimony could be very important. He was involved in the case for a long time. His words might explain more about the events. This change is a big moment for the case. It could help find answers for the Nicolaou family.
