EU Agrees New Rules for Pet Welfare

The European Union is making new laws for pets. These laws will help cats and dogs in all EU countries. The rules will create one standard for how breeders, sellers, and shelters must care for animals. This is to make sure all pets are protected.

The EU decided to make these new rules because animal laws are different in each country. These differences were a problem, especially for people who breed animals. Now, there will be one set of rules for everyone in the EU. The new rules will be fully ready by 2028.

The new law will help animals in important ways. It will limit how animals can be bred. It will also ban harmful procedures and require more space for pets. Dogs older than eight weeks must go outside every day. All cats and dogs will need microchips and registration. This will help find lost pets.

Buying pets online will also change. Online ads must be checked. They must show information about the registered animal. This will help stop bad online sales. It will also help people make good choices about owning a pet.

In Cyprus, the Greens party wants better animal protection. They asked for rules for stray cats. They want people to know about catching and sterilising cats. The Greens also want to know more about missing kittens. Stavros Papadouris, the Greens President, said that protecting animals needs real action.

All EU countries must create systems to follow these new rules. Countries can make even stricter rules if they want. This is a big change from before. It should lead to better care for cats and dogs everywhere in Europe. The success will depend on each country following the rules well.
