US Stops Immigration from Afghanistan After Shooting

There was a shooting in Washington, D.C. in the middle of the day. Two National Guard soldiers were badly hurt. Because of this, the United States has stopped all immigration from Afghanistan.

The attack happened on Wednesday near the White House. Police say a 29-year-old Afghan man, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, came around a corner and started shooting. It was like an ambush. The two soldiers are still in the hospital and are very sick. Police shot the suspect and stopped him.

President Donald Trump called the attack an act of terror. He said the government will now look again at every person who came from Afghanistan before. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it will not process any new requests from Afghans right now. They want to review their security rules first.

There is a big argument about the suspect's history. The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, said the man came to the U.S. without proper checks in 2021. She said that program let in people who were dangerous. However, other officials say the man asked for and received asylum legally in 2024 and 2025. This process includes security checks. The different stories show there is a political problem.

Now, President Trump is sending 500 more National Guard soldiers to Washington. In the future, this event may lead to a big review of thousands of Afghans living in the U.S. Their future is now uncertain.
