Two Workers Fall in Cyprus Construction Accidents

It has been a difficult week for Cyprus construction workers. Two serious accidents happened involving falls from high places. Sadly, one worker died. The PEO trade union is very unhappy. They say that workplace safety is not good enough. These accidents show old worries about worker safety. This is especially true for workers from other countries.

On Tuesday, a 43-year-old worker died. He fell from a building in Lakatamia, Nicosia. He was from a third country. This sad event happened during a busy time for building. The PEO strongly criticized the situation. Earlier on Tuesday, another worker fell in Paphos. This 21-year-old worker was badly hurt. He fell about eleven metres from a roof. Police and the Department of Labour Inspection are investigating both falls.

The PEO believes the death in Lakatamia was not just bad luck. They say it was a result of big problems. The union says there are not enough labour inspectors. This makes it hard to check safety properly. PEO also said some employers do not care enough about safety. They think some employers want more money. This can lead to human life being less important.

The investigation into the Paphos fall is ongoing. Officials are checking if all safety rules were followed. They are looking at different possibilities. These include problems with equipment or breaking safety rules. These two accidents happened very close together. They show the dangers in construction work. Falls from height are a main cause of injury and death. The PEO wants to see better safety now.
