Peru's President Removed After Secret Meetings

Peru's political situation is more unstable. The interim president, José Jerí, has been removed from office. The Congress voted to remove him after only four months. This happened because of secret meetings with Chinese businessmen. This is the third president removed in a short time. It shows a big problem with leadership in Peru.

The impeachment was very fast. Some people called it an "express impeachment." Jerí was accused of not telling people about meetings with foreigners. One businessman was Yang Zhihua, also known as "Johnny." Security cameras may show Jerí meeting secretly. This controversy is called "Chifa-gate." Jerí was seen in a hooded shirt. This made people worry about secret influence.

Another Chinese person, Ji Wu Xiaodong, was also at a meeting. He is now under house arrest for illegal timber trading. Jerí says he did nothing wrong. He says the accusations are political attacks. However, people do not trust him now. His popularity has dropped a lot. Political parties are staying away from him. Peru will have presidential elections in April.

This is not new for Peru. Jerí followed Dina Boluarte, who was also removed last October. Many presidents have changed since 2016. This shows ongoing problems. Some experts think Peru's parliament is too strong. The president's power is weaker.

Now, Peru must choose another interim president. This is needed before the April elections. Prosecutors are investigating the secret meetings. They want to know if Jerí accepted bribes. The constant change of presidents makes it hard for Peru to govern well.
