Cyprus Says Goodbye to Former President George Vassiliou

Cyprus recently held a sad farewell for its third President, George Vassiliou. He was a respected economist and leader. His time as president was from 1988 to 1993. During this period, he made important changes to the economy. He also worked hard to connect Cyprus with Europe. The country had a day of mourning. Flags were flown at half-mast. A state funeral was held with honors.

Mr. Vassiliou passed away at age 94. He had been ill for a long time. Many people praised his strong leadership. He wanted to find a peaceful solution for the island's division. His death has brought many messages of respect. People recognized his big influence on the country.

George Vassiliou was born in Cyprus. He studied economics and became a successful businessman. Then, he became a well-known politician. He led Cyprus through important changes. His presidency included new ideas for social welfare and taxes.

A key success was starting the University of Cyprus in 1992. This showed his belief in education. It was an investment in the future of Cyprus. He also helped make the media more open. He ended the state's control over broadcasting.

Internationally, Mr. Vassiliou strongly supported Cyprus joining the European Union. This happened in 2004. He also worked to reunify the island. He talked with others about a federal solution. His economic plans during his presidency worked well. The country's wealth grew significantly.

His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, also spoke. She said, "It is difficult to say goodbye to this man." They were married for almost 60 years. He will be remembered as a leader for Europe and Cyprus.
