US Military Strikes Syria After Attack

The United States military recently finished air attacks in Syria. These attacks were against the ISIL group. The US acted because of a bad attack in December. That attack killed two American soldiers and an interpreter. The operation was called "Hawkeye." It lasted for about two months. Before the latest strikes, many ISIL prisoners were sent to Iraq.

The main reason for these actions was an ISIL attack near Palmyra. Sergeant Edgar Torres-Tovar and Sergeant William Howard died. Interpreter Ayad Sakat also died. The US Central Command planned to weaken ISIL. Operation Hawkeye was successful. It stopped more than fifty ISIL fighters. About one hundred important sites and weapons were also destroyed.

The US also helped move many ISIL fighters from Syria to Iraq. The Iraqi government asked for this. They want these fighters to face justice in Iraq. This transfer was a big job. It shows countries working together after ISIL lost its territory.

Syrian government forces recently took control of the al-Tanf military base. US troops were there before. This is a significant change in eastern Syria. It makes the situation more complex for everyone. The US-led coalition worked with Kurdish forces against ISIL. Now, the challenge is more difficult.

These military actions aim to stop ISIL from growing stronger. They want to prevent future attacks. ISIL was defeated in Syria in 2019. However, the group is still a threat. Sending prisoners to Iraq will lead to trials. This will help hold people responsible. The situation at al-Tanf adds complexity to efforts for peace in Syria.
