Cyprus Faces Water Cuts: Alternating Supply System Introduced

Cypriot people will soon have less water. Authorities have ordered a 10% cut in water supply. This means water will only be available every other day. This system is like what happened in 2008 and 2009. It will make life harder for families. It will also stress the island's water system.

The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) announced the restrictions. The Water Development Department made the decision. After checking the water pipes, the EOA decided this was the best plan. They looked at water levels in reservoirs. They also checked the need for good water pressure.

Constantinos Yiorkatzis leads the Nicosia EOA. He explained the plan. They studied how less water would affect things. They decided a day-on, day-off system was the only way. This plan shares the less water fairly. It stops some areas from having no water for too long. However, it will be difficult for everyone.

These water cuts will cause more problems. The EOA thinks pipe breakdowns will rise by 30%. This will lead to longer times without water. The amount of lost water will also increase by about 5%. This makes the system less efficient. It also uses up more of the available water.

Families will also spend more money. Managing water shortages will cost millions of euros. This could be for storing water or buying water-saving devices. Businesses may also be affected by water problems.

It will take about three years for the water system to work normally again. This shows how serious the situation is. People in Cyprus will need to adapt. The water system will be tested in the coming months.
