Cyprus Police Face Several Big Challenges

The government in Cyprus is dealing with a number of difficult police problems at the same time. These include a new look at allowing police to use taser guns, a failed plan to buy security systems, and a serious issue with drunk and drug-impaired drivers.

First, the Justice Minister has ordered a new study on letting police use tasers. These are weapons that use electricity to stop a person. Police leaders say tasers are important because they offer an option between shouting and using a real gun. "They are a better choice than a gun, where you might kill someone, or a baton, where you have to get very close," a police spokesperson said. The idea was first proposed in 2019 but stopped. Now, the government is looking at it again.

At the same time, a government audit found big problems with a plan to buy anti-drone systems. The seven-year project cost a lot of money but failed. The audit says the planning was bad and the rules for choosing a company were too strict. The project ended in April 2025, leaving important places without protection from drones.

On the roads, there is a growing crisis. Police records show more than 3,200 drunk driving and 869 drug-driving offenses in just ten months of 2025. In one bad week, four deadly crashes happened. One driver was both very drunk and had used drugs. A police director said it takes about a month to get official drug test results, which makes it hard to punish drivers quickly.

Finally, Cyprus is also talking to police in Greece. They want to learn how to create a special team to fight organized crime groups. All these issues show the police are trying to improve their tools and methods while facing old and new problems.
