Baby Formula Companies Under Criminal Investigation

Parisian prosecutors have started a major criminal investigation. This is happening because of problems with baby formula. Over sixty countries have recalled these products. The investigation began on Thursday. It is about possible negligence. This is concerning milk tainted with a dangerous toxin.

The investigation includes big companies. Nestle, Lactalis, and Danone are involved. Smaller brands like Babybio are also included. The inquiry started after many reports. Parents filed complaints in France. Their babies allegedly vomited after eating the formula. In the UK, 36 babies had suspected food poisoning.

The problem is with an ingredient called ARA oil. This oil is added to baby formula. It is thought to help babies grow. Investigations suggest a supplier of this oil is the source of the toxin. It is believed to be a Chinese company. This supplier is reportedly not making the oil anymore. China is now testing its own baby formula.

The toxin is called cereulide. It can make babies sick. Symptoms include vomiting and stomach pain. The toxin is strong. It cannot be removed by cooking. Therefore, many products were removed from stores.

This incident has big consequences. It raises questions about food safety. It also questions the integrity of supply chains. The companies involved could suffer reputational damage. Regulators will likely increase scrutiny. The global recalls show how connected food supplies are. Strong oversight is needed to protect public health.
