Cyprus Leads EU in Cutting Emissions

Cyprus has made a big step in environmental policy. It is now a leader in the European Union for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. New data from Eurostat shows Cyprus was third in the EU for lowering emissions in the third quarter of 2025. This happened while the economy stayed strong.

The numbers show Cyprus cut its greenhouse gas output by about 5.2 per cent from the last quarter. This is very good. Only Estonia and Slovenia did better with bigger cuts. This success is important because the country's economy did not suffer. It either grew or stayed the same. This shows that economic growth and less pollution can happen together. This is a main goal for the EU's climate plan.

In the whole EU, emissions were a bit higher. Total emissions went up by 1.1 per cent from the second quarter of 2025. However, the EU's economy grew by 0.4 per cent. Households had the biggest increase in emissions, by 3.6 per cent. Manufacturing also increased emissions by 1.4 per cent. The energy sector was the only one to reduce emissions, by 0.8 per cent.

Compared to the same time last year, EU emissions stayed the same. But the EU economy grew by 1.6 per cent. Most EU countries, 17 of them, saw emissions rise. Ten countries, however, cut their emissions. Only Lithuania also saw its economy shrink. The other nine countries, like Cyprus, showed that it is possible to cut emissions and keep the economy strong.

Cyprus's good performance is very important. It shows other countries how to reduce emissions without hurting the economy. This suggests that good policies and investments in green ideas can help both the environment and the economy. Cyprus's example is a positive sign for the EU's green goals. It shows a greener economy is possible and can lead to success. Cyprus is committed to meeting the EU's climate targets.
