Canada Joins European Defence Group

Canada has become the first country outside Europe to join a major European Union defence program. The leaders of Canada and the European Commission announced the decision together. This shows Canada wants to work more closely with Europe on defence and buy less military equipment from the United States.

Europe is feeling less safe because of the ongoing threat from Russia. Because of this, the EU created a large fund called SAFE. This fund will pay for modernizing the armies of EU countries. The goal is for Europe to have a stronger, more independent defence by 2030. Many in Europe also worry about changing American policies.

For Canada, this is also about economics and politics. Recently, Canada has had serious trade problems with the United States. There have also been arguments about Canadian independence. Canada's Prime Minister said joining SAFE will help the Canadian military get new technology. It will also create business for Canadian companies and bring European money to Canada. He said over 70% of Canada's military spending will now go to places other than the US.

This agreement lets Canadian defence companies sell their products more easily in Europe. It will also lead to more joint projects. The leaders called it an important next step in their partnership.

Experts say this is a big strategic change. Canada is not just buying new equipment; it is building a stronger partnership with Europe. This makes the relationship between Canada and the US less central. In the future, Canadian and European defence industries will likely work together more, creating a partnership that depends less on the United States.
