Paphos Mayor Faces Multiple Investigations

The Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, is facing several legal problems. He is being questioned by police about blackmail. Also, there are big investigations into claims of corruption and bad behaviour. These probes look at possible cover-ups by the police. They also examine money and building plan problems at the Paphos Municipality over many years.

Mayor Phedonos says he is innocent of these claims. He believes they are a political attack. He says the blackmail accusation comes from a problem with his family. He also links it to a disagreement with a local builder, Theodoros Aristodemou. Mr. Aristodemou had previously accused the mayor of rape. The mayor thinks these accusations are used to harm his reputation before the next election.

A new investigation started because of corruption claims by Annie Alexui. She says she has proof, like videos. She believes this shows bad actions and hiding by the police. The Justice Minister, Costas Fitiris, said investigations must follow official rules. He said that evidence is needed, not just social media posts.

The large investigation into the Paphos Municipality started in 2022. It looks at money issues and planning mistakes. The Audit Service joined in 2023. In 2024, the police department for fighting crime took over. The case file was then sent to the Legal Service of Cyprus.

These investigations are very important for public officials in Cyprus. The results could affect politicians and public trust. Officials want to be fair to everyone. They must investigate all serious claims thoroughly.
