Tehran Businesses Shut Down Amidst Economic Woes

Many businesses in Tehran have recently closed. This is making Iran's difficult economy even worse. Authorities say the closures are because of rule-breaking and not following police rules.

However, these shutdowns happened after protests in December. This makes people wonder if they are connected to businesses supporting the protests. Popular places for young people are affected. The national economy is described as "cratering."

Police have closed private businesses in public areas. Official notices say the businesses broke "the country’s rules." But the number of closures and their timing suggest more than just rule-breaking. It seems like an effort to stop support for protests.

A businessman named Mohammad Ali Saedinia had many businesses shut down. His assets were also taken. The judiciary said he is in prison to pay for damages from recent events.

A confession letter, supposedly from Saedinia, was released. It suggests internal market problems and money difficulties. The letter mentions his son mistakenly closing stores with the Tehran bazaar. This hints that economic problems might be seen as a protest.

Iran's economy faces many problems. International sanctions and bad management have caused a big economic drop. Closing businesses hurts people's jobs. It also creates more worry among the population. This economic weakness happens with difficult relations with the United States. This makes economic recovery harder. The business closures seem to be a complex action. They aim to enforce rules and stop protests. This has big effects on Iran's economy.
