Cyprus: Energy and Diplomacy Power the Island Nation

Cyprus is becoming important in Europe's energy plans. It is also building strong links with the EU and the UK. The country has large natural gas reserves under the sea. This helps Cyprus create economic chances. It also helps with important talks, like fishing agreements.

The island wants to use its offshore gas. Big energy companies are exploring for gas. ExxonMobil expects to announce gas findings soon. They will drill more to find out how much gas is there. This could be between 6 and 9 trillion cubic feet. ExxonMobil hopes to start selling gas between 2030 and 2035.

Another company, Eni, is also finding gas. Their Cronos field has about 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. Eni plans to decide about this project this year. They want to sell gas from Cronos by 2028. The gas will go to Egypt to be turned into LNG. Then it will be sent to Europe. This will bring money to Cyprus. However, low gas prices in Europe might limit profits.

Cyprus is also working on its foreign policy. It wants to be more active on the world stage. The country will soon lead the Council of the European Union. The President wants Cyprus to have a bigger voice in Brussels. He also wants to improve relationships in the region.

This diplomacy helps Cyprus in EU-UK talks. Cyprus can help the EU and the UK talk about fishing. They can also discuss other important topics. Last year, the EU and the UK agreed on a fishing deal. This deal is good until 2038. It helps fishermen and ensures food security.

Cyprus's energy and diplomacy are important. Developing gas can make Cyprus a key gas exporter. This helps Europe's energy supply. Cyprus could also help the EU and UK work together better. People are more hopeful about Cyprus's role in the world now.
