Political Changes and Tensions in Turkish Cyprus

This week, Turkish Cyprus saw several important political events. These included party elections, serious accusations from the Prime Minister, and the start of talks about the minimum wage. The political situation seems to be changing.

First, the opposition Demokrat Parti (DP) made its leadership stronger. The party's council voted again for Serhat Akpınar as General Secretary. They also chose nine people for their main executive board. Party leaders say this shows unity as they prepare for future elections.

At the same time, Prime Minister Üstel made a strong statement. He said that he and his family are victims of a long and organized smear campaign. "My family and I face a planned character assassination," he said. He did not name anyone, but his words increase political tensions and could lead to legal action.

On another issue, the government started early work to decide the minimum wage for 2026. The Minister of Labor said they are talking with workers' and employers' groups. They want to find a fair wage so people can live with dignity. A special commission will make the final decision later.

Also, a government minister congratulated Sıla Usar İncirli. She is the new leader of the main opposition party, CTP. He said her election was a good example of peaceful competition inside a party.

Together, these events show a political world that is very active. Opposition parties are organizing, the Prime Minister feels under attack, and the government is thinking about economic problems. The next few months will show if this leads to more conflict or more cooperation.
