US Allows More Beef Imports

The US government has changed a trade rule. This change will allow more beef from Argentina to enter the country. It is an increase of 80,000 metric tons of beef. This beef will have lower taxes. This is part of a new trade deal between the US and Argentina. The deal also helps US products go to Argentina.

Officials say the goal is to lower beef prices for Americans. Last year, beef prices were very high. This happened because people wanted to buy more beef. Also, there were fewer cattle. The US cattle population is at a 75-year low. Drought made it hard to grow grass for the cattle. This also made food for cattle more expensive.

Argentina can now send more lean beef trimmings to the US. These trimmings will have lower import taxes. The beef trimmings are used to make ground beef. This is for hamburger patties. The idea is to make more ground beef. This should help keep prices stable.

However, American cattle farmers are not happy. They worry that more foreign beef will lower their prices. This could hurt their businesses. Senator Deb Fischer said the US should help its own farmers. She said the government should cut rules and lower costs. Farmers are already facing difficult times.

Some economists think the price drop for consumers might be small. The extra beef is a lot for this specific rule. But it might not change grocery prices much. Food companies might save money. This could help them make more profit. The long-term effects on US cattle farmers are still being studied.
