Cyprus Government Changes Top Jobs Before EU Role

The government of Cyprus has made many changes to its top civil servants. Several senior officials have moved to new jobs, and four new Directors General have started work. The ministers agreed on these changes in a special meeting on Tuesday. This happens exactly one month before Cyprus takes over the important role of leading the Council of the European Union for six months.

One of the most talked-about new appointments is Georgios Papageorgiou. He is now the Director General of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. He is married to Irini Piki, who is the Deputy Minister to the President. Before this, he worked in important cultural jobs, including for the Nicosia International Festival. He is taking over from Emmanouela Lambrianidou, who has moved to a new post.

Many other existing officials have also changed jobs. They are now working in different ministries like Defence, Justice, Tourism, Shipping, and Labour. Experts believe the government is doing this to make sure it works as well as possible before its busy time leading the EU.

One person, Anna Aristotelous, did not get a new job. Reports say this is because she is involved in an ongoing criminal case. This shows the government does not want officials with legal problems in top roles right now.

The timing of these changes is very important. Cyprus will lead complex EU discussions starting in January 2026. The government needs a strong and stable team. By moving experienced people to key areas like Energy, Migration, and Education, Cyprus is preparing for its big EU role. People will be watching to see if these changes help the government work better.
