Prisoner Dies in Cell, Investigation Begins

A 63-year-old prisoner died in his cell at Nicosia Central Prisons on Friday. He was serving a life sentence. An investigation has started to find out why he died. Prison doctors tried to help him. However, he was later pronounced dead at Nicosia General Hospital. This is the second death in the prison in less than two months. It is causing worry about prisoners' safety.

Prison staff found the man unresponsive at about 3:55 PM. The medical team tried to save him, but it was not successful. He was then taken to the hospital. Doctors think he had a heart attack. An autopsy has been ordered to be sure of the cause of death. This will also check for any other reasons.

The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department is leading the inquiry. They are working with the Prisons Department. A Prisons Department spokesperson said they are cooperating fully. This is to ensure a complete review of the incident. The prisoner's family has been told about his death.

This death is similar to another prisoner's death in December. That prisoner also died in prison. Two deaths in a short time will increase attention on the prison's rules and medical care. People will ask about health checks for long-term prisoners. They will also ask about how quickly medical help arrives. The autopsy will be important for the family and the public. It will help decide what happens next. The investigation will look at everything about the prisoner's last hours.
