Cyprus Hospitals Face High Pressure

Hospitals in Cyprus are very busy. They are almost full because many people are sick. This is because of influenza and other common winter illnesses. The number of patients with breathing problems has increased a lot. Emergency rooms are very busy. Doctors are thinking about changing planned medical operations. This situation makes people worry about the health system.

Hospital beds are about 90% full. This shows the health problem is serious. Many patients are coming from nursing homes. Some of these patients have bad breathing problems. They need special care and stay in hospital for a long time. These older patients use more resources.

Nurses and doctors are working very hard. Panagiotis Savva said, "The pressure is visible in emergency rooms." We often see ambulances waiting outside. This is because there are not enough beds. Some patients wait up to 48 hours for a bed. This long wait can affect their recovery.

To help with the overcrowding, officials are looking for solutions. They are thinking about delaying non-urgent surgeries. This could free up beds in the hospitals. The Ministry of Health might also get more beds from private hospitals. This would help manage the large number of patients.

Charalambos Charilaou from OKYPY said, "There may be difficulties, but emergency cases are being handled." He wants to reassure people. This means serious cases are still getting care. Health officials are watching the situation closely. They are managing patient numbers and resources.

This problem shows that health systems can be weak. This is especially true during widespread illnesses. High hospital numbers and tired staff raise questions. We need to be ready for these events. If the illnesses do not stop soon, or if new plans do not work, Cyprus's health system could be in more trouble. The next few days are important.
