Cyprus Introduces New Road Safety Laws

Cyprus is making new rules for road safety. This is because of many serious traffic accidents. Parliament members and the Transport Minister met on Thursday. They talked about how to make roads safer for everyone. New laws will be proposed soon.

These new laws will make drivers more responsible. They will also protect people who walk or cycle. The country wants to update how it checks for traffic rules. Many young people and motorcyclists have been hurt or died. Last year, 17 motorcyclists and 9 pedestrians died. This is a sad number.

The Transport Minister, Alexis Vafeades, said changes are needed. The police gave many ideas. A new group will create a plan to make roads safer. This plan will help put the ideas into action.

A new rule will be for young drivers. They will not be allowed any alcohol when driving. This rule is also for new drivers and those without a license. MP Chrysanthos Savvides said many drivers are caught breaking rules. He thinks many young drivers are not caught. Alcohol and drugs together are very dangerous.

Driver education will also be better. All delivery workers on motorcycles or electric bikes must have bright markings. This will help others see them better. This is especially important in bad weather.

Traffic cameras will get a software update on March 1st. This update will cost over one million euros. A group will check if the cameras are working well. The police will also be able to stop drivers on drugs more quickly. The Chief of Police can take away their license right away.

Fast electric bikes are also a problem. Police will check for bikes that go too fast. These new rules will help make Cyprus roads safer for everyone.
