US Starts Project to Secure Critical Minerals

The United States has started a new plan called "Project Vault." This project will create a reserve of important minerals. The goal is to reduce China's strong influence on global supply chains. President Donald Trump announced the initiative. It shows a change in how Washington and its allies want to get necessary materials. These materials are vital for economies and national security. An international meeting is also planned. It will help create a group to rely less on China.

Project Vault will use a $10 billion loan from the US Export-Import Bank. Private companies will add $1.67 billion more. This plan is similar to the country's oil reserve. The main aim is to have enough minerals if supplies are interrupted. China has restricted exports before. This reserve will protect American industries and workers. It will help ensure continuous access to minerals. These minerals are used in manufacturing, electronics, and renewable energy.

Australia is also creating a reserve. Their Resources Minister, Madeleine King, confirmed this. Australia will spend A$1.2 billion. They will store minerals like antimony and gallium. This shows countries are agreeing on this issue. A meeting in Washington will bring together about twenty nations. The United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Canada, and India will be there. Some Latin American countries will also attend.

The meeting will discuss ways to strengthen supply chains. They might explore government guarantees for mineral prices. This would encourage production outside of China. The plan addresses national security worries. It also aims to maintain technological leadership. Furthermore, it supports the move to sustainable energy. This transition needs these critical resources.

China controls a large part of the critical minerals market. They mine about 70% of rare earth minerals. They also process 90% of them. This near-monopoly gives China power. The new partnerships and reserves aim to counter this power. They will make supply chains stronger. This will reduce vulnerability to disruptions. These projects will change global mineral markets. They also show changes in the world's political relationships.
