A new report from the European Parliament shows problems for Greek Cypriot children. These children go to schools in Rizokarpaso. The report says they face limits on their freedom. This includes individual, education, and religious freedoms. Turkish Cypriot authorities are accused of making these limits. This affects the quality of their education.
The report studied many facts about the situation. It shows that Turkish Cypriot authorities have stopped some things. Seven school books were not allowed. Seven new teachers were not approved. These actions hurt the schools for Greek Cypriot children. This is a sensitive issue because of past events.
These problems are connected to an old agreement. The Third Vienna Agreement from 1975 is important. It promised good living conditions for Greek Cypriots in the north. This included education and religious freedom. The report says current actions break these promises. It clearly states human rights are being violated.
The number of students in Rizokarpaso schools is small. The secondary school has 15 students. The primary school has 18 students. Kindergarten has 16 pupils. Still, there are many problems. The UN helps with teachers and school materials.
Tufan Erhurman, a leader from the Turkish Cypriot side, spoke about this. He said education is very important for children in the area. He promised to help. He also asked for a Turkish language school for Turkish Cypriot children in Limassol. The report will help the EU understand the situation. A politician wants to visit Rizokarpaso to see the problems.
