Many Cancers Could Be Prevented, Study Says

A new study shows many cancer cases can be avoided. Scientists from the World Health Organization (WHO) did this study. It looked at lifestyle and environment. The study says we need better plans to stop cancer.

The research looked at 185 countries. It found seven million cancer cases each year could have been prevented. About 37% of all cancers are from things we can avoid. These include smoking, bad food, pollution, and infections.

In Europe, almost 40% of cancers are linked to these avoidable factors. Researchers said this number is surprisingly high. This is important because cancer care is not the same everywhere in Europe. Some people get diagnosed late. Others do not get good treatment.

The study looked at about 30 risk factors. These are things like smoking, too much sun, being overweight, and not moving enough. It also looked at infections that can cause cancer. This information helps us know where to focus our efforts.

Politicians are paying attention to these results. They are talking about how to prevent cancer better. Members of the European Parliament want more action. They say fighting cancer is a big challenge for Europe.

Some cancers are caused by age or genes. However, most cancers are not. They happen because of things we are exposed to over time. These can be changed. Therefore, we have a chance to improve health around the world. By 2026, healthcare systems will be busier. This study is a warning. It shows we need to invest in prevention now.
