Powerful Ocean Stories Show Human Strength

Recent events in the Caribbean and Australia show the ocean's great power. They also show how strong people can be in difficult situations. These stories are about life and danger. They show how far people will go to survive.

In Tobago, Peter Smith was on holiday. A bull shark attacked him in April 2024. The shark was three metres long. It bit his leg, arm, and stomach. He lost a lot of blood. Smith fought the shark bravely. He said he hit it very hard. He was not very afraid of sharks afterwards. This shows his strong spirit.

In Western Australia, the Appelbee family was near Quindalup beach. They were on paddleboards and a kayak. The weather changed quickly. The children drifted far from the land. They lost their oars in the sea. Strong winds pushed them fourteen kilometres away. They were lost at sea.

Young Austin Appelbee saved his family. He is thirteen years old. He understood their danger. He swam alone for help. He swam for four hours. He swam over four kilometres to reach the shore. He told the authorities. Rescuers called his swim "superhuman." His mother and younger siblings waited on the paddleboards. The family was reunited safely. Austin's actions and the rescue teams were very fast. The Appelbee family was not hurt. However, they were tired. Austin said he did not feel like a hero.
