Population Numbers Cause Debate in North Cyprus

There is a big discussion in Northern Cyprus. Official population numbers do not match mobile phone use data. This makes people question the accuracy of population statistics. At the same time, the European Union is sending vaccines. This is to help with a growing animal disease problem. These events show the difficult challenges in the region.

The Northern Cyprus Statistics Institute gave a population forecast. They think there will be 489,308 people by the end of 2024. However, this is very different from data from the phone company. In September, there were over 1.1 million mobile phone users. Many of these phones were actively used. This means the number of phones is much higher than the number of people.

For example, Hong Kong has many mobile phones per person. The European Union average is lower. If Northern Cyprus had a similar rate to the Republic of Cyprus, its population would be much larger. These differences are not new. There is a large gap between official numbers and phone data.

The last time people were counted was in 2011. This old data makes it hard to understand the current population. The uncertainty about population numbers can affect many things. This includes how resources are shared and how the government is represented.

Also, there is a serious animal disease outbreak. It started in December. This disease spreads easily and is a big threat to farm animals. The European Union is sending 500,000 vaccine doses. They are also providing tests and support for vets. Strict rules are in place to stop the disease from spreading. Solving the population data problem and stopping the disease are important for Northern Cyprus.
