US Immigration Raids Spark Anger and Lawsuits

The United States has increased immigration enforcement operations. This happened in Minneapolis and Chicago. Many people are angry and have started legal cases. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) led these actions.

In Minneapolis, about 3,000 agents arrived. This was a very large operation. It happened after two U.S. citizens were shot by agents. State officials sued. They said the operation broke state laws. They also worried about agent behavior.

A judge did not stop the operation. She saw some problems, like racial profiling. However, she said the operation was not illegal. The judge strongly criticized the government's actions. She called them cruel and power-hungry.

Chicago also had a similar operation. It was called "Operation Midway Blitz." Agents targeted people without legal papers who were thought to be criminals. In some neighborhoods, agents searched homes. People were afraid. Local businesses suffered because residents stayed inside.

The operations have had sad consequences. Two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were killed by agents. The Justice Department is investigating Alex Pretti's death.

A judge in Texas ordered a father and son released from ICE detention. The judge criticized the government. He said they were trying to meet deportation numbers. This, and detaining students, shows the harshness of the crackdown. It seems the government has daily arrest goals.
