Cyprus Faces Rising Living Costs

A new report shows that living costs in Cyprus are going up. This is happening across the country. Limassol is the most expensive city. The report makes people worry about the economy. Cyprus relies on foreign money and tourism. This is putting a strain on resources and people.

Limassol is a big city for businesses. Many foreign workers live there. It is the most expensive place on the island. This is good for the economy. However, rent and prices are now very high. People with local salaries find it hard to live in Limassol. Some people are moving to cheaper villages nearby.

The growth in Limassol causes problems. More people are living there. Tourists also visit often. This puts pressure on water and electricity. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus said they can "just about" meet demand in summer. Water is also a problem for the island.

The government wants more foreign companies and tourists. This has helped the economy grow. But some people say this growth is too fast. It is too much for the island's resources. A one-bedroom apartment in Limassol costs €1,338 a month. In Nicosia, it costs €664.

In Limassol, the average salary is €2,500. Rent takes up 32.2% of this money. Nicosia has the lowest average salary at €1,550. However, housing is cheaper there. This difference between money and costs is a concern.

Many people agree that Cyprus needs to change its plan. The focus on tourists and foreign investment is risky. The island needs a more balanced economy. It needs to think about the environment and all its people. Cyprus must find a way for the economy and nature to live together.
