Storm Kristin Causes Death and Damage in Portugal

Storm Kristin brought much destruction to Portugal. At least five people died. Many buildings were damaged. The storm had very heavy rain and strong winds. This caused flooding and landslides. The central and northern parts of the country were hit the most. Officials called it an "extreme weather event."

The storm's damage became clear after it passed. In Leiria, three people lost their lives. One person was hit by metal that fell. Another person was inside a house that collapsed. In Figueira da Foz, a Ferris wheel fell over. Roofs were torn off buildings. This was dangerous for cars and people. A man died when a tree fell on his car. Another person died in Marinha Grande. Floodwaters also swept away a man's car.

The winds were very strong. They reached 150 kilometres per hour. At Monte Real air base, winds were 178 kilometres per hour. These strong winds broke many trees. They also damaged buildings and spread debris everywhere.

Many people were affected by Storm Kristin. Over 3,000 weather problems happened. The civil protection authority worked hard to help. Schools in many towns closed. Travel was difficult. More than 850,000 people lost electricity. This happened on Wednesday.

The government is worried about extreme weather. Storm Kristin shows that such events can be very bad. People are now working to rescue those in need. The country will need time to rebuild. The power outages show that Portugal's energy system needs to be stronger.
