Cyprus Faces Criticism Over Special Education

Lawmakers in Cyprus are unhappy with the government's slow progress. They have discussed special education for many years. The laws for special education are very old. They have not changed since 1999. This makes things difficult for children with special needs and their families.

The Parliamentary Education Committee met recently. They are worried about the lack of changes. The current laws are not good enough for today's children with disabilities. The government promised big changes in 2024 and 2025. However, there is no new law on the parliamentary schedule for 2026. This has made many politicians frustrated.

Politicians spoke about the problems families face. They shared stories of "human tragedies." These problems happen because the laws are not good. Special schools are too full. Important rooms, like therapy rooms, are used for storage. This means schools cannot take new students.

New laws and resources are needed. This will help provide important services. The situation is not just a government problem. It is a human problem. Children and families cannot wait any longer for help. The current parliamentary session is ending soon. Elections are also coming.

One Member of Parliament said, "The delays are a human failure." He said politicians must act quickly. He asked for the new bill to be finished soon. It should be presented to Parliament in two weeks. This must happen before politicians stop work for elections. They also need money for improvements. New ideas for funding are being discussed. Cyprus needs to fix this important problem.
